Urogenital Atrphy and Osteoporosis in the Menopause
Abstract
A number of somatic, physiologic and psychologic changes occur during the menopause, some of which are due to estrogen deficiency as a consequence of ovarian follicular exhaustion and others of which are caused by the estrogen independent consequences of aging.
Late sequelae ascribed to the menopause in association with the long-term lowered estrogen milieu are dyspareunia, urethritis, osteoporosis and arteriosclerotic disease. Symptoms of urogenital artophy and osteoporosis are among the primary reasons that menopausal and postmenopausal women seek the aid of a physician.
The general aspect of urogenital atrophy and osteoprosis in the menopause is reviewed on the literature.
